Learning through Genres

Updated: Apr 15, 2020

Blog #4

In this class, I have learned how much rhetors actually have to consider when writing and also how everything connects in the writing process. For example, the rhetor's context, exigence, and situation all connect together as well as things like their genres and audiences. Everything in the process of composing something to persuade people connects together to deliver the best outcomes.

With working with a variety of genres I have learned how many different outlets exist. At the beginning of this class, I didn’t really know what genre was considered apart from the usual categorization of movies/books, like romance and horror. But with project 2, the research essay about a community you are not a part of really forced me to explore other forms of genres and so did project 1. For the first project, I focused on the hidden and subtle effects placed throughout different episodes of a show. The writers of these shows obviously have a storyline going on yet if you look hard enough there are always things laying in the back that are just as important. Like there could be a specific book laying on a table in the background or even a refrigerator magnet with a quote on it. then for project 2, I was exposed to using academic sources from libraries and an interview. So instead of a video form of media, I turned to face to face interviews. The face to face interview allowed me to think ahead of time to formulate questions regarding my topic and setting up talking points. Then for the magic of the actual interview, I got to really speak and ask the right questions to perfect the ideas for my research essay. But I also used academic sources that I found in the library both physical and online.

With these different genres, I learned that the audiences are all so different and so is the way the messages should be conveyed. Some audiences respond better to purely picture-based information whereas others may respond more toward more text-based information. For certain genres, the audiences may be of all different ages so different tactics have to be used to connect to those ages. Considering the audience is one of the most important things when writing, the rhetor must really pay attention. If it's written correctly to connect to the proper audience then the response from the audience will then be the best and they’ll support the topic.

I really learned a lot from using the twitter account. To be honest I didn’t really use twitter before this class but having an outlet to share what you are doing or to ask any questions about assignments is unbelievably helpful. Sometimes it can be hard for professors to look at emails for just one question and you don’t really know how to ask others in the class for help… but with twitter, I can ask and anyone who is free can help and Chloe is always extremely quick about it. definitely, a helpful tool to have.
