Rhetorical Rationale

Rhetorical Rationale

My entire campaign is centered around the idea of what trace evidence is and why it is important. I thought this would go hand in hand with my essay because my essay goes really in depth into what trace evidence is. It also goes over the course of trace evidence from its collection at the crime scene all the way to its use within court proceedings. Each piece of my campaign shows another aspect of how trace evidence can be important while at the same time each are able to reach different audiences to spread the word.

The first piece of my campaign is in centered in Times Square, New York. My idea for this piece of the campaign was to have all the screens in time square to have something relating to trace evidence. Millions of people travel through Times Square within an hour, so if each screen has something new and relevant to share all of these people will be exposed to the information. Whether it is a businessman making his way to an important meeting or a bicyclist making a food delivery, each person without even noticing will be shown this pertinent information regarding trace evidence. I made it so one screen would have more written information of what trace evidence is capable of providing to a case while another has a picture of a cartoon dog investigator. This was the information reaches people who need to read more to understand while also others are able to just quickly glance at a picture and get the meaning of the message. For this piece, I decided the best way to present my idea was to draw out the image of Times Square with my ideas for the billboard screens. With it drawn out it shows exactly what I wished to have on there and is perfect for my projects audience (classmates) to understand my idea. I also made sure to keep the entire drawing in black and white except for the billboard images to make sure the attention was drawn to my messages first.

The second piece of my campaign was a sketch of a crime scene. This piece goes really well with the third piece which I’ll explain later. In order for people to fully understand what trace evidence is and how it really impacts crime scenes, I figured what could be better than a visual representation. The crime scene sketch shows the layout of a house and a woman who wasn’t so lucky. Scattered around the house are little clues as to what could have happened there. The sketch is done in black and white and in red are numbers by each piece of visual evidence. These are done in red to make sure the audience’s attention is drawn first to them. Then written around the drawing is the vital information that the police would need to know. Like the address of the crime scene and the victims name. As well as a ledger of what was found at the crime scene, for example, the possible murder weapon. I also added the trace evidence that could be found at the crime scene. Although trace evidence can be hard to detect and may not be seen by the naked eye, I found it easier to write it all out for people who aren’t trained to know what and where the traces would be. That way they can read it all and understand. I thought this piece of my campaign would be a great way to show what trace evidence is while being something visual that people can view.

The third piece of my campaign is my murder mystery blog. Before I mentioned how I created a crime scene and now it’s time to dive right into the story behind it. I also mentioned how the billboards in Times Square lay out the ideas and importance of trace evidence which will also be helpful in solving the fictional crime. My blog lays out the crime scene and what evidence was found while also giving a list of possible suspects. While the crime scene provided a visual form for people to view the blog is for the people who would rather read to understand. Each suspect has motive to kill the woman in the sketch, but the mission of the blog is to figure out Who Did It! After giving the suspects and their motives, I review the trace evidence that was found again and that’s when all the pieces come into play and the killer is caught. And of course, once the killer is caught, I give more information on why they did what they did and some facts about what happened. As well as adding a quick snippet of a news article reporting the incident. Toward the end of the blog I wrapped up what exactly the importance of the trace evidence was in this murder case. Trace evidence helped find the killer and properly convict him.

Through this campaign I first established what trace evidence was and what it provides to a case. Then I provided an example of how it would be used in cases by showing a crime scene. Once the crime scene is established, I lay out the story behind it and how the trace evidence found helped in the case.
