A New and Improved Writer

Blog #5

My perception of writing has certainly changed for the better. At the beginning of this course, I would get so frustrated with my writing and didn’t like the process it took me to write mostly because I didn’t understand it all. This course has taught me the importance of not stressing so much over the first draft- that it’s okay to have a shitty first draft. I’ve learned a lot about myself when it comes to writing. I’ve learned more about my process and I think I actually have accepted the full process regardless of how time-consuming ;). I also didn’t really pay attention to all the freedom you have when writing. When I thought of an essay, I thought of the generic high school AP literature way: a (usually) three-pronged thesis written, of course, first and then the introduction paragraph, and so on. They were always timed essays and full of stress and very strict on the structure. But in this class, I’ve come to realize I can do so much with my essays. Well first off I learned how to properly write papers all together for college, like the research paper. Then I learned how to make them a little fancier with pictures inserted with their caption or even adding footnotes- which is totally crazy! I know as a writer I’m not the kind of person who can just spit out a brilliant thesis and a perfect introduction and I’m perfectly okay with that. My process involved more laying out of ideas and coming up with a game plan for my essay. Then I’ll begin with whatever body paragraph I think is the strongest in the planning process and then I let the essay take me where ever it goes. I certainly can say I don’t hate writing as much as I did. I associated writing with only negative thoughts, like crap I only have an hour to read and write this or it needs to be absolutely perfect on my first try. Luckily, that’s not the case for me anymore. Not only have I learned more about myself as a writer and how to actually write a proper essay, but I also learned how to use other platforms. The Wix account idea was obviously extremely daunting for me considering I can barely use basic technology but it has proved to be quite resourceful. Once I figured out how to use it I was able to take full advantage of the platform. Getting to write for this class in a less structured way is really awesome, the blogs allow me to get my points across without feeling like it needs to be super locked on. If I wanted to say some corny sidebar comments, this blog is the perfect place to do it. In fact, all these outlets of writing that this class has all offer something different to the table and allow me to write in different ways. Obviously, I’m not a perfect writer and quite frankly I don’t think those exist, I still need to improve things like my sentence structures or use of commas and so on. Or maybe even work on fully understanding the prompt before beginning the project ;). But hey, I’ve learned so much more than I thought I could in a semester and it will all help me in plenty of other fields and classes.
